I-81 and WEST VIRGINIA

Martinsburg

Visitors' Center - From I-81, take exit 13. If northbound, turn right; if southbound, turn left. Follow Cr-15 (King Street) into town. At the intersection of Spring Street (which is 1 block after Queen Street and US-11), turn left, go to blocks to Martin Street and turn right. The Martinsburg-Berkeley County Convention & Visitors Bureau is at 229A E. Martin Street.
  For more information, phone 1-304-264-8801.

B & O Roundhouse - The depot, roundhouse, repair shops, and other B&O facilities were completed by 1849 and were considered one of the finest facilities of this type in the nation. Two decades later, the Civil War changed everything. The Union needed these facilities as part of their railroad link to the Ohio Valley. The Confederates felt that the facilities had to be destroyed to deny the Union forces this important link. Battles raged, repeatedly. The Confederates destroyed the facilities nine times just to have the Union rebuild each time. Today these many of these facilities stand as a monument to the turmoil and emotion of the Civil War.
NOTE: The Roundhouse is currently undergoing major rejuvenation. It can still be viewed from the outside (it is an imposing structure). Located about 200 yards from the Visitors' Center, we suggest you stop by the Visitors' Center and they can fill you in and fill you up with many very interesting stories. It may be possible to make an appointment to tour the Round House but you must phone the Visitors' Center in advance so they can try to make arrangements.

Belle Boyd House - Belle Boyd went down in history as one of the foremost Confederate spies. The house was built in 1853 by her father and is one of the finest Greek Revival house in Martinsburg. Belle Boyd shot and killed a Union soldier because he threatened her mother. She was imprisoned at least four times during the Civil War allegedly for passing information to the Confederates. Today the Belle Boyd House is a museum containing items ranging from the Civil War period to beautiful, hand-made quilts. There are also many military items from the Spanish-American War and the two World Wars.
For more information, phone 1-304-267-4713 or visit the Historical Society's web page:
